Hey all got a little LAN question for you.

At the moment my bedroom is wireless and the connection is getting a little crappy for me so im thinking of going wired.

Im thinking of getting Ethernet to my by wiring it through the house or doing it through powerline havent decided yet.

My plan is to have have a lot of my consoles connected with ethernet but thats not what this is about.

I want to have an Xbox 360 LAN party with my friends.

Im looking to get an 8 port unmanaged 100mbit switch, if i connect all of the xboxs to the switch with this count as LAN and work or does it need to be connected to my main router?

Little diagram to help out but might not be much use

That should be fine. Because the switch is unmanaged, it's no different that adding extra physical ports to your internal network. All of the devices should get an IP assigned by your main router and be on the same local network.

CPU: i5 4670k • Cooler: Corsair H100i • Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER • RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite 2x 8GB • Storage: Samsung 840 250GB SSD, 2x WD Red 3TB • GPU: EVGA GTX 780 3GB • PSU: Corsair RM750W • Case: Corsair 750D • Mouse: Razer Naga 2012 (I actually use the thing for productivity/media buttons) • Keyboard: Ducky Shine 3 w/ Browns - Green LED • Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27" 2560 x 1440, ASUS PB238Q 23" 1920x1080 • Lighting: 2m NZXT Sleeved Blue LED Strip • pcpartpicker.com/p/3cHfZ

What happens if I disconnect it from the main router though, then it will no longer be a LAN yes?

Check your classifieds you can usually get a good network switch, I have a friend who has a 24 port gigabit switch for 250$.

I have a couple cheap ones in my mind from tp link :)

@satanisahippy

It will be a LAN from your diagram.

Same question as before, what happens if i disconnect the main router?

If you have 2 or more computing devices connected to each other in some way, that is a LAN.  For it to work, you will need to ensure all IP addresses are set manually if you don't have a device providing DHCP services (your home router usually does this).  Just make sure they are all on the same subnet, and you will be fine.  Easiest way would just be to make them 192.168.1.X ,  where X is whatever you want.  Just start at 192.168.1.10 and work your way up with as many devices as you have.  So, 192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.11, 192.168.1.12, and so on.  You only need a router to go between subnets.

I would also suggest finding a cheap Gbit switch with as many ports as you need, ebay/craigslist usually has plenty for cheap.  Though really, sometimes it is almost just as cheap to buy a new one, since you don't need fancy options.
