I've got a Samsung HD501LJ, got it a couple years ago, started making some clicking noise a while ago, so im backing up stuff just in case. I tried to check it's health status but SMART is disabled, it says "SMART not supported", weird. I remember it came like this by default, but I was to lazy to do anything about it.

All of my other drivers (some older) have SMART enabled and I can check their health.

How do I enable SMART on this disk so I can see whats up with it?

Hey there,

What software are you using to check your S.M.A.R.T. status? Have you checked your BIOS settings if there's an option there?
Could always contact your drive's manufacturer for some advice and recommendations. :)

As @captain_WD says, you should enable this option in the BIOS if you have it. Then you can use various tools and utilities to view the SMART status. It's possible either your board doesn't support it, or the drives don't depending on the model.

System/Server Administrator - Networking - Storage - Virtualization - Scripting - Applications

How to enable SMART tho?

SMART is built into every drive. Your particular SMART checking program (What are you using? Crystal Disk Info?) can't understand that drive manufacturer's SMART codes or it's not supported or enabled in BIOS.

I would check with the manufacturer and see what tools are available for it.

SMART is enabled on the bios simply because every othe driver except this shows SMART status, so the problem is only with this drive.

I have tried CrystalDiskInfo and Disk Utility on Linux. Im trying to enable SMART in linux with smartctl and I get this:

sudo smartctl -s on /dev/sda

smartctl 5.41 2011-06-09 r3365 [i686-linux-3.2.0-26-generic] (local build)

=== START OF ENABLE/DISABLE COMMANDS SECTION ===

Error SMART Enable failed: scsi error aborted command

Smartctl: SMART Enable Failed.

A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

Ive tried adding -T permissive at the end, I get the same scsi error.

what can I do?
