Does renderfarming make sense?

Hi guys,

my sister does a lot of video rendering. Not sure which software, but semi-professional level at least, after effects and stuff.

She's currently running some i7 quad core cpu on her laptop.

I have a dual core ahtlon x64 5000+ desktop pc at home.

How much does it make sense to add machines at that age to a render farm, say if you had 2 of them for example??

Do render-farms even need graphics cards? or is a geforce 510 or 8500 gt fine? As far as I could see, it basically just uses cpu???

render farming really only begins to make sense when you need more power than you can cram into a single machine, or you want to build a powerful render farm to be shared.

It's mainly to reduce render time in this case.

My friends and I do some rendering and stuff and it is easier to just give each other the files and just render parts you can instead of trying to set up a farm...

oh, so just using the multiple laptops at work, etc??

What do you do at home? She's pretty dedicated :D

if you already have the devices, its really easy to set up in the adobe

Okay, but would it make a significant different with those slow cpus or just a few seconds like 0.04%? hah

proportional to the cpus strength. I let my friend use my xeon with his I7 and my brothers fx-6300, the fx is slightly slower then the mobile I7, but the xeon tears though frames. so overall its about 3x as fast in our case

Wow okay, so there indeed IS a difference :-D So adding a 8350 to a mobile i7 should "double" the rendering performance.

I haven't really benchmarked them directly, but I have had his i7 mobile v my old i5-3570k(4.0ghz) and the i5 was almost exactly twice as fast. And I know the i5 and 8350 are almost marginally close when it comes to rendering.

So yes. Probably not exactly, but within 10% either way of doubling

I'm guessing more than double mobile CPUs are ass

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Cool, thanks Guys! So whenever I'm not doing anything on my PC, she can use it for renderfarming! :-D

Is it possible to use GPU to help? Or does a better GPU help rendering?? Cause I'm guessing a HD 6990 should be pretty beast??
