Get a good PSU and any card from a brand you trust and has support in your area. Extra solid components and stuff will not be useful after 5 years, you will replace the card before that.

I am not sure which 980 to get between the reasonable non reference( strix, acx 2.0) and the crazy no reference ones (matrix platinum, Hybrid) because I don't know if it's worth the extra $100...

Gigabyte G1 is the best for the money, no other 980 has cherry-picked GPUs like the G1 does (aside from the ludicrous Kingpin)

The matrix, HOF, classified all do as well.

Matrix does too, but afaik HOF doesn't and Classified doesn't for sure.

And by cherry-picked I mean pretty much all of them are good overclockers, not just selective binning, cause there's been people on OCN who got Classified 970s/980s that didn't overclock that well.

The classified has been cherry picked since that model even came out, just because every card isn't hitting crazy clocks doesn't mean it won't under other cooling methods.

It wasn't thermal issues. Some guy on OCN got two classifieds for SLI and one of them overclocked very well while the other not so well, so chip lottery applies.

"very well" is quite subjective.

HOF is binned to have low asic for LN2 and Classified is binned for good water performance and KPE is for LN2 and DICE.

I've seen Classified 980's hit 1625 @ 1.3v running my bios's under water.

PEWDIEPIE DONT CROSS THAT BRIDGE

Unless they were watercooled, it's pretty irrelevant, lots of higher binned cards don't OC very well on air & stock voltage, but once put under water or better cooling with more voltage they become monsters.

and 2 cards out of hundreds is an absolute terrible sample size.

Either way both the HOF and Classified cost more then the G1

We weren't talking about price at all, you said the G1 and kingpin were the only cherry picked GPU's.

Literally the first thing I said was G1 being the best for the money...

When I said we, I meant gofspar and I.

I was willing to accept your correction aside from the classified which I've seen people do worse in the chip lottery with then others.

2 out of hundreds of cards might not be a great comparison, but the cooler argument isn't exactly valid. Two of the same cards, with the same coolers, at the same voltages, and one doesn't overclock as well. That is isolating every variable but the chip.

Unless both cards are on water, comparing them on stock coolers is pretty worthless.

Classified cards are binned for water and Ln2, some of them with higher ASIC's will clock higher on stock coolers, and others won't do much at all until they're on water or Ln2.

Some cards have sweet spots in temps where they really start scaling, that could be what his case was.

My Lightning 780 wouldn't OC for shit until it was under 58C, then I could run 100 mhz higher on the core without any artifacts and crashing, once it went over 58, artifacts, once over 62, crash.
