Z87 bios update

Go to solution Solved by runit3,

Most ASUS boards can do USB BIOS Flashback, with no CPU installed. You're good to go, just follow these directions:

http://www.asus.com/microsite/2014/MB/New_4th_gen_Intel_processor_compatibility/

Planning on getting

and

Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz LGA 1150 Boxed Processor

But pc part picker is giving me an error (Some Intel Z87 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs.)
the guy at microcenter said id need another cpu to update the motherboard

can anyone confirm this or give me a way to do this more easily. This combo was suggested by a pretty respected user, i cant remember the name and i dont think he would recommend this if i had to buy two cpus in order to get this thing running.

i do have another pc, if that helps, thanks

No, I don't think you need another CPU. I don't know how that would work anyway haha. You update the bios through the bios. Oh wait, you may need two CPUs to power on the PC to enter the bios! Therefore yes you'll need two processors, old CPU and the new CPU.

blackshades on

so would i turn it on w/o the cpu  first or what?

I would assemble everything and just attempt to turn it on first go. Boards will ship with varying levels of BIOS versions depending on when they shipped out from the manufacturer. It may just work fine OTB. If it doesn't make it to the BIOS it's safe to assume you'll need to perform the USB BIOS flashback.
