If i wanted to could I put any old ssd into my laptop? my laptop is hp and it is from about 2013/14. So would this be fine or would i have to find a special laptop drive?

As long as the ssd is 2.5 inch (which they nearly all are) and the laptop has sata 6gbs compatibility then go for it.

It will work without SATA V3 (6gbps) if the DRIVE is compatible with older versions of the SATA standard, which almost all drives are.
