Hi i am looking to build my first pc however my budget is struggling to accomodate an i7 cpu meaning i can only afford the i5. Will this matter when i tend to do a lot of programming and use a lot of programmes at once like photoshop and premier pro? In other words is it the cpu that will affect productivity or something else like memory.

Thanks

Your CPU will affect how fast a program runs, and render times. If youre on a budget, you may want to look at a Xeon E3. What is your budget?

What would be a good build for a xeon e3 processor i havent even considered them? Do they require a different motherboard?

Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor is generally an good choice. They are compatible with H97 and Z97 motherboards. Also with most 8x chipset motherboards after a BIOS update. Unlike i5 and i7, most Xeon parts do not have an integrated gpu.

Thanks for your help. Does using a xeon cpu mean i have to look for different components like gpus and memory etc.. or can i generally go about things the same as if i were picking an i5?

For your purposes it is the same as an i7. It has 4 hyperthreaded Haswell (Refresh) cores. There are some differences, but they do not really affect your intended uses. Make gpu and memory choices based on the same criteria as you would picking an i5 or i7.

Thanks for the ideas i will definately look into them. I was looking into getting some sort of asus z97 board, however i have heard people talk about server boards and ws boards to use with the xeon cpu. Is there any good reason for me to go for one of these?

No.

Unless you intend to have more than one Nvidia gpu, look at H97 motherboards. Asus has a number of excellent models, http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#c=100&m=8.

The stock cooler will do a pretty decent job.

Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive is a better choice of ssd. It is new tech and less expensive.

The case is very nice, but expensive. Some of that cost would be better invested improving the psu.

Consider getting an IPS monitor. Better color reproduction and wider viewing angles. Dell U2414H would be a good choice.
