So I have a old( not really ) PC that I want to turn to a NAS. But can it still run windows 7 and function as a normal PC. My GF uses this computer but rarely so I want it to retain the functionality or else I wont do it. It has one 2 TB HDD in it so If I partitioned it could I set aside say 500 gigs to the main system and the other 1500 more er less to the NAS. I don't have any experience doing any NAS or major networking things so any advice or pointing me in a good direction or even better yet a video somebody made thoroughly explaining it would be amazing!

This was posted under networking then I saw the storage solutions section :P

Are you using the NAS just for local network storage or are you going to setup something else as well?

Just for a local network storage.

Go to the Network and Sharing center and advanced sharing settings to the left.

Go down to password protected sharing and turn that off.

Go to computer.

Right click the partition and go to sharing.

In advanced sharing, you can share to everyone or user on your network under permissions, controlling who can read/change the files.

The partition/drive will then show up on the network. You can do the same thing with specific folders.

I would recommend wiring it up if you can (ethernet cable), so you'll have a better quality connection to your storage

and so the computer holding your storage wouldn't have to compete with other wifi devices when you access / transfer data.

I'm assuming that you have networking devices that are gigabit capable (I'm sure its safe to assume this  :))
