We've had the same router for 9 years and I recently got a new laptop. The new laptop is having the worst time keeping a steady signal when my old laptop (which is the same age as the router) always had a strong signal in the same area of the house. My question is: Is there some new wifi standard in my new laptop that's not what's in the router that's causing this problem? Thanks in advance.

http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-AIR-AP1121G-A-K9-Aironet-Access-Point/dp/B00013BLF4buy one of these. It is a dedicated access point. I found one in my work's IT junk pile. My tablet gets full signal strength throughout a 4 level home. look how cheap the used ones are vs. the new ones...

I appreciate the answer, but do you know why it would be a good idea to change it out? I'm just trying to learn is all. thanks.

9 years ago you'd be lucky to be running 54mbps Wireless G... which had comparably awful speeds, range, and stability to the Wireless N that succeeded it. If you're not lucky, oh be damned with 11mbps Wireless B.

Nowadays we have Wireless AC, and although to most it wouldn't make a noticeable difference over N, it's definitely worthwhile to upgrade from B/G to a modern N router. You will be able to get much better speeds, as well as much better range and stability in the signal throughout the house.
