Recently windows has been doing very strange things regarding how quick icons load and whatnot.

I'll be sitting there browsing the web and when i go into the download folder everything has a blank icon, and only like half of them end up loading after a minute.

SSD isnt under any high usage, and it has only slightly over 10tb of data written to it which should not be anywhere near the end of the nand's lifetime.

I tried a system restore and it did not help at all, and seemed to cause another problem, where text input is very sluggish for a minute after the desktop appears (understandable with a hard drive, but considering i have been opening up chrome and using the pc right as the desktop appears  for a long time now, it seems a bit odd)

Picture just about sums up what the folders look like when opened

settings>controlpanel>system and security>system>advanced system settings>advanced>settings which is it on best preformance or appearence

ive set it to what i prefer, so most are enabled. Also since this was not changed prior to the problem, they are most likely independent.

set it to preformance and check all and see what happens

made no change.

The sidebar seems ok visually, but if i switch between the folder quickly then it will restart the loading process for another minute, just to only load half the things

First thing to do

Grab MBAM and run a full scan, don't bother with a quick scan. Get the Home version and ignore the free premium, unless you want it.

Post back afterwards.

I'm gonna take OP through a full SFC and DISM Image rebuild next anyway so this will be done as part of that. :)

One threat was found and deleted, however it was in a rar file fro a power iso install, so im not sure how much of a threat it actually was...

Have you tried to rebuild the icon cache?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

downloaded the .bat file, and let it go through eh process of recreating the icon cache, but the downloads folder still seems to be troublesome, and still wont load icons with programs attached to it, like word files/ if i close the windows and open it again, all the icons have vanished again...

That threat was nothing to worry about.

Next press

Win Key + X

and select Command Prompt As Admin. Type in the following and press enter

SFC /scannow

It will take a long time to finish but I need to know the output at the end of the scan.

Update: trying to see the properties of files without icons does not work either, so windows knows it is there but has trouble accessing it?

Its looking more and more like a hdd problem, however files on my 2 external hard drives also have the problem

We'll take a detour for a second.

Shut down then whip off your side panel and unplug all your drives except the SSD please.

Removed everything other than the ssd, and upon the reboot, the downloads folder was all loaded in so i was hoping for the best, but after looking around in the folder/ switching folders is "despawned" again

lol im done xD

TBH, i could probably just move the pictures, and downloads folder to the 2nd hdd and see if that helps, as this isnt "game breaking", but with the amount of windows re installs ive been doing lately, it just cant seem to go a couple of weeks without having an aneurysm...

Hmm, that's weird. There's no reason why SFC should of failed if your wim file is not corrupt?

Anyway sorry bud, I'm out of ideas.

One last real long shot, check you've got garbage collection enabled for your SSD by running command as admin and entering

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

The output will be one of the following

DisableDeleteNotify = 1 = TRIM support disabled

DisableDeleteNotify = 0 = TRIM support enabled

Either way thanks for all your help guys, but until i can be bothered either replacing the ssd/ reinstalling windows again, ill just migrate the frequently used files over to the 2nd hdd...

Yes, it says the status is "good" and S.M.A.R.T dosent highlight anything out of the ordinary, and the last firmware for the 840 was more than a year ago...
