I have a MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G

i was able to overclock my card to 1504 mhz core clock and 4001 mhz mem clock with no touch of voltage.

But i noticed that after playing games for a while when my card went above 70 degrees, the clock speed turns down to like 1490 mhz,no effect on mem clock.

I went  and increased the temp limit but this is still a problem, why so?

TIA

I have the same card, and it downclocks constantly because of the power limit no matter how high the temp limit. The power limit is pretty darn low on it, and even with a custom BIOS I hear, you can't get that much of a higher limit as it's hardware locked. Only way to get past it on that card is shunt resistor shorting (so I hear).

oh well whats the power usage it says in msi afterburner because if it goes over the max it will slow its self down i think

I guess there's nothing i can do about it then :(

Btw do you guys have coil whine?

and what mem do you have? i have elpida :/

i heard its bad, should i return the card?

i have my memory at 3903 x2 7806 and i have coil whine past 2000 FPS so in normal gaming no i dont and no they wont give you a new card just because you cant overclock as far as every one else

Elpida isn't as bad as Hynix i think.

No coil whine on mine which is pleasant, as my 770 screamed to hell with a slight OC. The only time i heard coil whine was on a loading screen at 3000fps, and it was extremely faint. Once I turned on VSync in Nvidia control panel it was gone.

Probably not, +480 is pretty darn good, and if you return it you might get Hynix. You won't notice that big of a jump with memory clock though, so it's not worth it. Even if you did get Samsung memory and got +600 you'll see <1fps difference. Not to mention 1500 is a nice OC. It's just not worth it to return.

i hit the hardware power limit max on my gtx 980 before i can even max out my cards potential , its a shame because i got a really good chip ... when i go to upgrade ima try to add power phases and what not and hope it doent go pop like my 290x

That's a real shame. I hit it on my 970 too, but a custom BIOS won't add to it I hear. Just the way the MSI 970 Gaming 4Gs are. No way I'm tech-savvy enough to be doing anything that crazy though.

I won't bios mod for my 980 , it's just a single bios card :/ , I'm not exactly sure I know what I'm doing when I go to mod my card but I'm sure I can figure it out haha , I've killed cards and repaired cards before but modding them .. That's something I want to do but haven't the courage or much knolage to do it yet :P

Lol well i'd try shunt resistor shorting with CLU/CLP. It won't kill it, and if you don't like it, you can clean it off and leave no trace  :)http://overclocking.guide/increase-the-nvidia-power-limit-all-cards/ Gets past the hardware limitations that you'd have even if you did use a custom BIOS, and you don't need a custom BIOS to unlock the power limit then.

hmm ok , thanks for the link , ill look into that. im comfortable with bios modding (done it alot for my amd cards) but i havent tried physical mods yet , just replaced voltage regulators that i blew up or caps that popped mostly

edit ; after a quick look at that article it looks stupidly simple and easy to do , ill give that a shot !
