Next step for 1080p?

Spent like $300aud on 270x now it's like 100-150AUD

So I was thinking crossfire but I don't really want AMD anymore but nvidia is overpriced so I might have to.

Nvidia is overpriced and has less hardware but better software optimisations and it seems like more games like nvidia more (They do pay more since they have more stock market compared to AMD)

But trying to not get off topic I suppose what i'm asking when will nvidia fuck off with their prices? I want to get a 970 but its like $400-500AUD which is just ridiculous and AMD has much better value but they don't sell enough and dont have enough support IMO, just really hating GPU market at the moment, im only at 1080p so I don't need that much power but GTA 5 max needs more than 3 Gigs of VRAM and the 270x isnt good enough

Really hard for me to decide a good card and spending over $300AUD at this point, I don't really want to get a 290x or 280x because it's not a big enough upgrade, but I think i'll wait until 300 series or the next nvidia series because right now the gpu market is fucked

I'd just wait for what the 300 series has to offer.  Perhaps you could save up enough money to get an R9 390x by then.

I think prices are more then fair to a degree. The 980 is overpriced but its a flagship, expect to pay a premium for flagships Nvidia or AMD. The 970 however offers comparable performance vs dollar. The higher you go the more each frame of performance costs and if you do the maths each card scales pretty well both companies know what they are doing when they price.

You are in Australia like me and the best card I have found for Dollar vs performance is

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=26611&zenid=a0343cfc541bb74d2281bda53f32b547

I think it would be a bit silly going with a X as they are very comparable when it comes to benchmarks only a few fps between them really and currently you can get the MSI in Australia from pccasegear (very reputable) for only 349 Australian. That my friend is a hard price to beat. unless your waiting on the 390 or 390x no reason in waiting imo and your best chance at a bargain is buying a 200 series as stores look to get rid of stock.

a 290/290x will be a sizable upgrade for you and if your not happy with that then you might be waiting a while. because the 390/x will be 500+ and the next generation of Nvidia is most likely 12 or more months away.

GTA 5 1080p high settings benchmark link at bottom.

970 Average FPS = 88. Cost 500 = $5.68 per frame. (this could be much lower as nothing was stated whether the card is oc or not which can add 15 to 25% better performance)

290X Average FPS = 79. Cost 459 = $5.80 per frame. (cheapest version found most retail at 499)

290 Average FPS = 78 WIthout sale 420 = $ 5.38 per frame.

290 Average FPS = 78 MSI costs 349 = $4.47 per frame (Card that is on sale for 70 dollars less)

270X Average FPS = 52 Cost 229 = $4.40 per frame

As you can see there is no magic, no card offers insane performance vs dollar each is priced accordingly and the real question is how much are you willing to spend... If you think gpus are overpriced overall well that is a different discussion. But I also feel your pain, it's an expensive part of a computer and seeing your GPU being crushed by a game sucks... but I am afraid those are your options. The 300 series will offer improvements but they will also be priced accordingly.

Edit: Fixed prices.

I feel like waiting for the 300 series but I have seen that deal before.

No magic indeed. I think that the prices should replace the upper tier, (so 970 priced at a 960 level), because they're honestly not that great compared to what I beleive AMD will release. But also 290 is very old now, it was out when I bought my 270, which was 2013, that deal is amazing but I think it's time I either get some real money or see what AMD has, and hope Australia doesn't markup the prices to high.
