Flip a coin....

Go to solution Solved by Jumper118,

the 7970+280X will be fastest, but the 290X will be quieter as long as its not a reference one. it depends on the resolution you are playing at too. for 1080p i would go with 7970/280X CF for 1440P i would go with a 4GB 290X

Terve!

Originally, wanted to flip a coin on this case. But since coins usually don't have that many sides, its kind a hard to do.

My case is that on "CoolingMachine" (specs in the signature) I am planing an upgrade.

I have one 7970 reference cooler design lying around and I have a 7950 from my friend. But it died a couple of weeks ago and I had to revive it.

Because I don't want to pull the 7950 out to rebuild it all the time (and because it has not a reference cooler) I don't see that as the best solution.

Also a friend of mine ask kindly to borrow the 7970 and the 7950 to play the Witcher 3. Further I should change the liquid on the PC, because of its runtime.

Also, as soon as the R9390 / 390x comes out and can be liquid cooled my other PC Kazumi will get an upgrade.

Ok, so here are the things I thought about:

-leave the GTX760 in the PC, just replace the liquid

-get a 280x, change the liquid and upgrade the whole loop later

-get a 290 and use that one

I am open for other suggestions, but please note that I am not too happy with everithing NVidia. The reason for that is that I want to help AMD as good as I can and that I find it silly to use an AMD CPU with an NVidia GPU.

Thanks a lot

Sayonara!

Single most powerful gpu all the way.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

Terve!

Oooh.

Anything but the 760 IMO.

Also I've never seen a four-sided coin. Most coins have three sides - the two flat faces and the round edge.

Well, not that the third side has an equal chance to show up.

the 7970+280X will be fastest, but the 290X will be quieter as long as its not a reference one. it depends on the resolution you are playing at too. for 1080p i would go with 7970/280X CF for 1440P i would go with a 4GB 290X

This system was never intended to be quiet, but as you can see it is liquid cooled. Thats why I am so tempted to use the 7970 in CFX and get rid of the reference cooler. Also I could use my nice black CFX Bridge.

Could you not just xfire the 7970 and 7950 ?

Or stick the 7950 cooler on the 7970 ?

I could CFX the 7970 and the 7950. But as I said I have revived the 7950. Once I put it into my loop I have no real chance of getting an other take on the revive (its never a permanent solution) without opening the whole loop again.

And I could stick the 7950 cooler on the 7970, but because it does not fit the card will die.

Single most powerful gpu all the way.

I don't know, but I always liked two GPUs in my system. Just for the looks.

Also I prefer the 7950 over the R9285 (both with Club 3D coolers on them), because the 7950 is longer.

Thanks for the help so far. I'll let it run for a bit longer and see if it changes.

the only problem is with 7970/280X CF under water would be that you will need to find a 280X with a reference PCB

Well you're right about that one but:

https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/club-3d-r9-280x-royal-queen-3gb-3gb-grafikkarte-722019

(Sorry that this one is in german)

and: http://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-fc7970-qcs.html

That should be a match, isn't it?

No warranty on Club 3d. But so what...

I'm really tempted for the CFX solution.

Cheaper and more powerfull....

Thank you again.

Thank you for the list, but how do you get them?

A quick google search did not reveal anything.

May I contact you about an other thing (that has nothing to do with all of that)?

Thanks again.

i got this list from overclocked.net http://www.overclock.net/t/1432035/official-amd-r9-280x-280-270x-270-owners-club/1350#post_21158213

The card you linked looks like it would be fine as that is on the list, but if you can't buy it from there then you will have to find if one of the stores in your country stock them, or if you are willing to buy it from another country then see if any other stores have any of them in stock.

Sure you can post about another thing that has nothing to doing with this is you want. its your thread :)

Thanks for the link.

I wanted to ask if I can PM you about something (some people don't like PMs).

It's about something I saw in your signature, so I don't think an other topic would solve that eighter.
