only time as far as im aware that you need to be specific with cables is if you wish to run Gsync surround and in that case you'd need a 900 series with 3 DPs on a single card or a multi card setup

I've used dual monitors for years. HDMI, DVI, and VGA in any combo all have worked like a charm.
