new home server: 1000$

Looking to buy a new home server for 1000$ or under. Was wondering what people thought about going with a used 2 processor system or building one?

Any recommendations for used machines?

1000$ max but cheaper means more drives/ram upgrades!

looking for at least 6 sata ports.

Used for nas, we server, virtual machine, and many other applications like folding.
