I'm in need of a laptop for programming. I'm sure I will do programming but i'm not sure if I will do intense gaming. Right now, I only play league and some minecraft, so I don't really need a good gpu for that. For sure I will need a half decent cpu. So if I'm buying a laptop, should I just go for the one that has a ok cpu and a ded gpu or just a strong cpu. I kind of want to play gta v and mortal kombat x soon

Or should I just buy one that has a good i7?

Anyone want to find me deals (new or refurbished) for laptops around $500? thanks

My Old Rig: Phenom II X4 965 4.0 ghz, Asus Motherboard, 4 GB DDR3-1333, Antec Case and PSU, no video card atm

My New Rig: i5-4590, MSI Motherboard, 8 GB DDR3-1600, Corsair Case, XFX PSU, HD 7950

I'd go for the Y40. Those ULV chips actually are still very powerful single-threaded, especially if you have the laptop plugged in and therefore Turbo Boost enabled. If this is going to be your regular use PC that you'd also want to play games like GTA V on then it's definitely the winner between the two. $500 is a pretty decent price for it imo

Y40 owner here.  GTA V won't run very well on it.  Fans gave out after 6 months and had to send it in for repair.  Lenovo repair technicians are borderline retarded.

hmmm.. so the ded gpu isn't even that good, so i'm better off getting a good cpu laptop(or just getting a cheaper one without gpu) and upgrading my old desktop/building a new desktop???

Get a somewhat decent laptop to program on, and upgrade/purchase a desktop for gaming purposes.

At that price range you can not get a laptop capable of running GTA V. I would recommend getting a dirt cheap $300 laptop(, programming is less intense than browsing the web). And later down the road getting a decent gaming PC. Or you can get a good gaming PC right now.

EDIT: dammit Aniallation I didn't see that xD

24 fps for that "cinematic" feel

After a couple weeks of behavioral sciences at my school I can easily conclude my parents need to grow up.

That's strange because I played it the other day on an Acer Aspire V5 with the same CPU (i5-4210U) and a similar performing GPU (850M) and it ran perfectly fine.

maybe it does.  And I have the i7 4510U.  So maybe it would be fine.

EDIT: I was just going by the performance of other games.  I haven't actually tested GTA V.
