Hey all, I have sort of a silly question, I recently overheard someone talking about how AMD cards are able to crossfire interchangeable with whatever card they feel like. for example a 7870 and 7950 both msi cards could crossfire together no problem, or a 7970 and a 7770 could run together. However Geforce cards can not and cab only SLI with the same cards ie. 670 and a 670 but not a 670 and a 660. was hoping you guys could maybe offer some insight into this confusing matter.

Crossfire supports hybrid formats (although this is only supported between same generation cards so 7970 and 7950 would work but 7970 and 7870 would not) and SLI does not. there are some exceptions like 59xx and 58xx and 57xx with 67xx.

here is a diagram, sorry its a little outdated but I'm sure you get the gist

Well as far as i know you were able to use CF with cards that have the same GPU on, i think Linus even mentioned 6990 with a 6970 will make trifire... but i have never seen someone do that, so far as i know HD 7000 can't do that at all, and you can forget any NV card to support this kind of SLI

AMD cards have slightly less restrictions but not to the level you described.

For example, you can xfire a 7950 with a 7970, a 7870 with a 7850, but NOT a 7870 with a 7950.

y that is it, that is what i have been looking for, only same GPU ( processing chip ) cards can do this kind of configuration
