I'm not looking for a PCPP, I wanna do that part myself. However, what sort of stuffs should I look for in an HTPC/fileserver that might be occasionally playing minecraft? Hyperthreading, cores, clock, gpu, etc.?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

i3 with 2cores +2 threads or 4 core i5

Lower wattage = better (so, that's why AMD wont be of much use).

Start with onboard GPU. And then go from there. Will need a quiet and cool GPU in most cases, and for minor gaming a 750ti or equivalent will do the trick.

Dont need tons of ram, 4-8GB is enough.

Possibly get mobo with dual ethernet. not necessary, but, can be useful in the future. Also, get one that has enough Sata3 ports to handle 5-6 drives.

Here's the HTPC I'm working on myself, probably overkill for what you're looking for in the processor department, but swap it for an i5 and you're good to go!

thats fine

he could still play simple games on it

if its mostly for HTPC..then you want it pretty quiet...

if its gonna be 50/50 gaming to htpc..then it would need to be changed alot....

Hehe... *sheepishly* just saw this... Is the APU enough for Minecraft, and MAYBE a LITTLE bit of other games at LOW settings? I could save a lot of dough that way...

Sweet. That gets me this build, which is $500 INCLUDING $70 keyboard.

I think I dun good. * pats self on back*

Although cheaper keyboard/mouse solutions would be welcome. Ideas?

Logitech makes a cheaper wireless keyboard + touchpad. I believe it's called the K400. I think you could get it on amazon or at walmart for like $30 Also, APUs depend on having faster RAM, so it's better to have 1866 ram in Dual-channel

Looks okay.

If you plan on storing files on this as a NAS.... get two drives and set them up in RAID.

definitely will be my first upgrade, but can't afford right now. Trying to get parents to pay for^^
