Hey all,

Running x2 gtx 980s in sli.

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-evga-gtx-980-superclocked-7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1241mhz-boost-1342mhz-2048-cores-3x-dp-1x-dvi-i-1x-h

(Forgive me for being a bit of a novice here since I've been using AMD cards for the last 5-6 years)

So I've been running these cards for a month or so now. When playing games or rendering they will hit 80c everytime.

Im not worried about the temperature since these cards can happily go to 95c.

I got the reference design since i wanted the hot air to be be pushed out the back of the case. instead of being recirculated around my case like most aftermarket coolers.

So my problem is, when the cards hit 80c They throttle back on the clock by about 100mhz. Before hitting 80c they will sit happy at 1380mhz. At 80c they will drop to about 1260mhz.

This is somewhat annoying to me, I was wondering if anyone has a decent fan profile since the one im using does keep the cards at about 70c. But since they are reference design cards they sound like a boeing jet taking off.

Im also new to the precison x software. If i set the target temp to 70c and power to 100% will i also get a throttle?

Cheers,

K

Tis the pains of reference + sli. If you set your target to 70c it will throttle sooner. But 100mhz shouldn't really make much of a difference. What kind of case cooling do you have?

I know right, The reference design just looked to beautiful to pass up. I was prepared for higher temps but the throttle is a bit annoying.

And no the difference isnt huge. I can still play anything maxed and having the hot air exit the back of the case is a bonus for me since my case is pretty terrible on airflow.

Thanks for the reply :)

Ive a h440 case. x3 static pressure 120mm fans to the front. *intake (default nzxt fans)

x1 140mm to the rear *exhasut

x2 noctua nf a-14 on the top with my radiator. *exhasut

Just had to look up the Nzxt H440 Razer. It looks quite restrictive. I'd be trying to find a way to get more air in there. Maybe take the side panel off while gaming.

I am planning to mod the right side of the case and having x2 120mm intake fans there. and covering the huge hole i put in the panel with a rad guard. (Something like the one linked)

Or maybe replace the 3 stock intake fans with some SP120's or Noctua nf12's.

Yeah im already thinking the same. Damn noctua fans price ramps up a bit when your buying more than 1 haha.

I have a pair of sp120's performance editions for my intake. They do have excellent static pressure but they can be quite loud at full speed. I can't speak for the quiet editions but the performance editions do come with optional inline resistors that help tame them if you don't have some sort of DC fan control. The PWM version costs too much IMO.

I have tried corsair fans before, At full speed they've never sounded to great. But my noctua fans sound lovely at max speed, 1500rpm.

Cooling is about the same for both brands too tbh. But both can be very expensive if you need a few of them.

I just dealt with a similar issue.

Basically raising the power limit and voltage helped remove the throttling, but I also had issues with the voltage because the cards have different ASIC values, so the higher ASIC card was running at a lower voltage and not boosting to the proper voltage which caused instability as I increased clockspeed.

My rule with fan profiles is never set the max fan speed past 55-60.  If you're at a point where 55-60 doesn't cool it enough, 70-100 won't make any difference and will just produce a shit ton of noise.

Here's the fan profile I use:

I don't have reference cards though, but your temps are still fine so increasing the power/temp limit will help.  That said, you're still a slave to Nvidia's fucking Maxwell BIOS bullshit so you may not be able to remove throttling completely.

You have more exhaust than intake even before considering the reference cards, I would consider slowing down the exhaust fans or even removing one and see what that does to the gpu temps.
