r9 290x crossfire problems!

So today i brought another r9 290x but the seacond one (the old one) runs a lot hottet than before and is constantly @ 1000mhz and around 60% even when just chrome is open with one tab is this normal?

One card will run hotter on multi-gpu configuration, much hotter if the airflow is not adequate. 

 

Maybe you can try enable and disable ULPS.

In the NZXT H440, yes. The case is horrible for airflow, my single card would peak at the max of 95c unless I took the front panel off, then it wouldn't go above the low 70s. I'm now running crossfire in the exact same case and really I can't run with the front panel on, this is the same for most people with the H440, some have modified their panels.

With reference coolers it shouldn't matter too much whether you have one or two cards.

 

But something is not right, my 2 290xs are half a slot apart from each other (two-and-a-half slot cooler on the PCS+ versions) and my top card is idling at ~38 degrees, at 20% fan speed.
