how are lewis diagrams and electron shell diagrams different?

Ummm, can't really remember my Chemistry lessons from Year 10 lol, but I know that the shell diagram, or something alike is where there are the electron shells, because you can't pinpoint the location of an electron (or 2, 4, 8, depends on the shell) and instead it's just said that it's within the 1st shell, 2nd shell, 3rd shell, and so on. 

Lewis Diagram I believe is where the amount of electrons in the most outer shell is placed around the symbol of the element, so for magnesium it'd be an MG with two dots around it, not sure on the placement though.
