I am looking into doing water cooling on my rig, and I have a few questions, and hope someone her can answer them:

1- Distilled water seems to be the standard, if I mix in some biocide. I have also seen people say use a kill coil. Is one better than the other? Can I use both in the same system? Should I use both?

2- Is there a defined way to hook this all together? Is it just as simple as Res->Pump->???->Res?

3- There are grommets in the case (Antec 1200 v3) for an external loop setup. Are there benefits to doing an external loop, like have the res and pump outside?

4- considering my case, the Antec 1200 v3, has 2x120mm fans right close to the cpu, would I be better off getting and AIO closed loop, or putting it together custom?

5- Fittings: compression, or quick disconnect? Does one have advantages over the other, considering the possibility to drain/fill/replace components over time?

I have tried to find answers to things like these, but the only answers I could find were broad answers on the topic of cooling in general.

welcome to the Linus Tech Tips forums!

  1. you want to use either the silver kill coil or the biocide, not both. can degrade the cooling efficiency and damage parts.
  2. as to routing, it is "a vision" or how clean it could be made. short runs, least amount of bends, crooks and cross-over paths.
  3. external is for what cannot find internally. case tech has improved immensely since the v3. idea is to have the noise inside muffled than in open audible range.
  4. depends on your v3 case roof space. AIO needs minimum 55mm from mobo to roof.
  5. no real advantage other than removing devices/hardware without loosing coolant. how often are you needing to remove the GPU/CPU?

hope that doesn't muddy the water too much..
