I would replace the 980s with a Titan X so he can upgrade to sli in the future

Also you should have a AIO liquid cooler with that budget

you have more flexibility with this option but still no aio water cooler as those are expensive Titan x is still expensive and hard to come by though so 980 build will be easier to get

How bout 1 980 nd add 16gb ram mayb go sli down the line

I agree with this ^ I could play 5760x1080 on ultra all games without ever dipping under 60 FPS with a single 970.

Titan X seems like overkill for a $2,000 budget. If he's doing rendering and editing (I assume videos), even a hex core might be a worthy upgrade.

Would u say 1 gtx 980 would b a good base start mayb duel sli in the future mayb spend a lil bit more on the ram or cpu?

Just a little more input... I totally realize that nVidia is wearing the crown at the moment, but that also means they are commanding a very high premium. The 290 and 290x can be had for considerably less. Crossfire 290 or 290x is not that much more than a single 980. Performance wise a Crossfire setup with these two cards is going to be some serious competition for a single 980.

Plus if he's talking about 1080p or 1440p gaming, even a single 290 or 290x is enough... for $300... not $550.

Quite a hefty premium. The 980 isn't worth $250 more. The 970 is a significantly better option.

Lest we forget, the 290x was also a $550+ card at one time... oh yeah... about six months. Someone take a guess where the 980 is going to be in six months?

I would say look into the 970. In my opinion the 980 is going to lose the most value over its lifetime and the $250 more that it costs is another video card, but its performance isn't justified. You're buying the 980 at nearly full retail price at this time. Look at two 970 cards or even at two AMD's 200 series. The 200 series is very unlikely to reduce much in value more compared to the 980.
