Hey all, so within the next 3-4 months i want to sort out this awful Sky router/modem combo they gave me because being stuck on 2.4Ghz is horrible in the block of flat i live in, and it also stuck to 100mb/s when all my devices can use 1 gb/s over cat 5e. Now what i wanted to know is what i gonna need to do this.

 

I live on in flat, consisting of 2 floors (on the top floor)

i have a 70/20

all my devices in the house can use 5GHZ (note 3, and all laptops can use AC)

 

manly want to use it so i can stream much more better through out the house and i'm able to change my DNS throughout the house and get around stupid blocks on the internet.

 

 

Question is what am i gonna need, i know i need a new AP which i was looking at the Asus ACR66U or 68U 

but i don't know if i need a new modem or something as well to go with this combo.

the modem should be fine...long as you can put it into dmz mode for the router...or make it a dumb modem by turning off all its NAT features and firewalls

 

and yes the ac66u and 68u are really nice..I got a 66u

just be sure to use the asus merlin firmware with it...fixes alot of the little bugs with asus firmware

 

I was gonna suggest a powerline adapter kit as well..but if you have other people in the place...it might connect to them as well

well i found that the modem i have was provided by BT and i've been using the the sky router/modem combo as just a router so :). don't have to worry about the router login thing :D.

the powerline adaptor is not so needed i would rather run a Cat5e/ cat6 cable down to the lower floor and use a switch to split it :) i only have 3 devices that use enet.

well i can't exactly stick the router in modem only mode :L, and i can input a DMZ ip address by the looks of it.
