So i just assembled a brand new PC for a housemate but it wont turn on.

When i turn on the power supply the HDD Led starts burning and a small green LED on the motherboard indicating that its in sleep mode or something.

But when i try to power it on, nothign happens (even fans dont start spinning, just literally nothing).

The only thing i can possibly thing of being wrong is the motherboard still having outdated BIOS and not supporting Haswell refresh but wouldnt that at least fail at post instead of not doing anything at all?

Did i miss something or should i send it RMA?

Hardware:

What i tried:
  • switching reset and power switch (to make sure the connection/switch is not broken)
  • another power supply i had laying around
  • taking the motherboard out of the case
  • only use one of the memory sticks
  • reseat CPU
  • check socket for bent pins
  • check back of motherboard for scratches

You are right about BIOS version being out of date. Chipset is for older Haswell and CPU is Devils Canyon/Haswell refresh as you said. And the answer is no, it won't boot or even show screen about it. Mobo just plain refuses to work together with it. If it has the flashback utility, you can update BIOS without CPU, follow instructions on manual or Asus website. Otherwise you will need Haswel chip to update it.

That motherboard and CPU aren't compatible without a BIOS update.  In order to do a BIOS update, you need a Haswell CPU, not devil's Canyon.

Tnx for the responses guys.

SInce all processors in this hous are haswell refresh i cant really test it with a haswell chip.

I was assuming that since haswell refresh has been out for like forever the mobo's now in store should have the updated bios when you buy them.

Is it possible to determine the bios version based on the serial number?

And if the CPU needs an update would that explain the fans not even trying to spin but just literally doing nothing?

Nothing will happen without an updated BIOS.  Its like the CPU isn't even inserted.

While Haswell refresh has been out for awhile, these Haswell motherboards were manufactured long ago, and sit in storage for long periods of time.  The chances of getting an H81/B85 mobo that is compatible with Haswell Refresh out of the box is very slim, I don't think serial number will be able to tell you that either.  I think you need to return it and buy H97, or find someone with a Haswell CPU to borrow and update the BIOS.

OK thanks.

There is a store about 10km from here that also does assembly of computers (didnt order from them because they only sell like 3 brands and they are overpriced).

I'll ask them if they can update the bios and else i'll just go there and get some thermal compound and remove the CPU from my grandparents PC (i3 4330 is old haswell right?) and use that one.

EDIT:

I checked the serial number and according to this thread it should be from July 2014 (so about 2 months after haswell refrehs was released)

The board might be 2 months after Haswell refresh release, but when did it get BIOS update? My Z87 got it's update 4 months after new chip was released.

Update was available at the end of January 2014 so 6 months before my motherboard was made:

I see that there have been further updates since. But this still seems like BIOS issue. I you can take it to store and have them borrow older chip or do it for you, thats best option to get it working.
