R9 270X problem.

I have installed my R9 270X and when ever I play games i get a lot of fps stutter, I stood still in GTA V and had a solid 80 Fps and after 2 min it dropped to 20-30 and the gpu usage was also very low, I did some benchmarks and the gpu usage on that stayed on 98-99% but when I play game the gpu usage hover around 7-60 % and i get the odd fps drop now and then, this never happened with my old gpu which was a 650ti, I have a 500w psu, amd fx 6300 and my motherboard is a N68-VS3 FX. I must add that nothing is over clocked and i ahve 8Gb of ram, the temps of my cpu never went above 40 oC and the gpu hovered around 40-50 oC.

Can you check your max memory usage with MSI Afterburner?

how much vram are you using in gta, you can see it in the graphic options within GTA.

I barely use MSI After burner so how would i check that? I highly doubt there's any bottlenecking because my friend has the exact build but no problem

I only use 1.3 Gb.

try updating the drivers (or reinstalling if you have the latest already)

turn off cool and quiet

allot of cpu's are declocking to 1.4ghz, also dont overclock on that board but you could try stock 3.5ghz with like 1.3v and see how low you can get the voltage, (its just good advice)

yep, while your in there set voltage to like 1.3 and get coretemp and find your cpu vid.

this still isnt great though..

supports 8 core cpu.....errr yeah, sure.cut it down to the pcie slot, take fof the ide port and that could be itx!

Ide port? The VID is 1.1625 v

OMG the 1.3 volts fixed it!!! You literally are the best person in the world!! Thank you sososososo much!!! There's still the same frame drop but for not as long and not as frequent but i'll have to deal with it but it's bearable

i doubt your cpu vid is 1.16v, my chips pretty low at 1.225 so maybe that 1.16v reading was from a semi-idle state.

run cinebench and while its going round get core temp and cpu-z in the foreground and take a print screen and upload it as a jpeg (smaller file size).

if you can reduce your voltage more your vrms will throttle less (not your chips fault, thats just a terrible board) and your performance will increase, however if you reduce voltages too much your system may become unstable, the cpu vid is a good indicator of what the chip wants regarding voltage. that doesnt mean that its a minimum its just a guide.

Woah you have a low vid!!! (Cpu is prtty leaky but should run on sweet F.A volts)

try 1.2v and see if its stable.

also check to see what loadline calibration settings you have, it might end up idling at 1.2v but under load it might drop to 1.1v and become unstable, adding some loadline calibration counteracts vdroop so that under stress more voltage is added to increase stability (you dont want too much because it might end up throttling again aswell as increasing temps), experiment a little you wont blow anything, try and get load voltage to match idle voltage.

also if you find a happy stable spot that is where the frequency doesnt drop during stress test and your getting stock fx6300 scores, once you've got that try bumping the multi a little at a time, you might be able to get 4ghz with only 1.25v or something, which so long as it doesnt throttle and hold you back would be sweet.

putting less voltage into your chip isnt going to mes anything up (it might become unstable but you can always put it back..)

maybe try 1.275, then 1.25, then 1.225 and so on and find where it isnt stable, by stable i mean it wont pass 1 hour of amd overdrive stress test.

OR you can reduce it to a certain point like 1.25 and IF its stable at stock speeds on that voltage with no issues, then you can try bumping the multiplier up to see what you can get out of it on low volts.

amd is typically over volted from factory which can cause the odd problem like you've had, thankfully it means on "stock volts" the cpu's overclock really well, OR at stock speeds they undervolt really well.

this is because clock speed and required voltage are related.

you ideally want to reduce the voltage to the point where you have no problems, thats the priority, its possible that that isnt possible with that board and you might just end up with the problem reduced allot (though in gta5 since i turned off cool n quiet ive had no frame drop issues).

but yeah try a lower voltage untill the problem is gone as good as it can be while passing amd overdrive stress. then report back.

I've put it to 1.2v and so far I've but Gta v on very high settings and ran that fine for about 3 or so hours with no stutter so the problem seems to be fine, checked temp and my cpu never went above 35 oC so you fixed it! Thank you very much, I really appreciate it   <3

cool, that 35*c sound wierd though it might be a wrong sensor, download speccy and try that, ive never had it get a wrong sensor or reading. then configure the core temp sensor to what speccy says
