I went out and bought a new 3tb drive yesterday since I decided to raid 1 it while waiting for my home server to be finished upgrading. Since it is a drive used for long term storage (WD My Book Green drive) and was plugged in via usb I decided to plug it in via sata 2 instead hoping for it to be faster. Well it seems windows did not recognize it and messed the drive up, put it back into the enclosure and still didn't work. I have run a few different recovery programs, none have which have worked yet. Any ideas on what to do? Also if someone who has a WB my book could post file system and everything about their drive as to partitions and such.

Have you tried formatting via disk management?

So windows did not recognize it, but managed to mess it up?

I had this happen to me, but it was when the pc decided to turn off during a windows installation, so there is no way that is coming back...

if no other pc can recognize the drive now, you might have to format (assuming it till shows under disk manager)

U should use disk management to set the drive to a letter. So ur PC can see it.

He wants the data on it, the drive may need a letter assigned to it, which won't delete anything or format it.

For data recovery, the free things usually don't work, I'd say your best bet is to take it to a PC store or buy the software for yourself. I use http://www.z-a-recovery.com/

I am using software my father uses for his job. Part of his job I'd guess 5% or so is recovering data from drives.

He wants the data on it, the drive may need a letter assigned to it, which won't delete anything or format it.

It is showing as un-allocated, so far we have found 126 signature files but nothing else.

I think I will try the getdata back program once the current scan is done

each scan takes about 6 hours total due to it being 3 TB and average read of 135 MB/s

If it says unallocted in the disk manager, ant you just assign a drive letter to it, thus making it show up?

Im assuming the problem is greater than that though...

When it is unallocated you can't do that only create a partition of click properties.
