Transfering Program Files to 2nd drive

Go to solution Solved by lutzee,

Okay, first things first

Just copying the files will cause no end of problems. You will end up with a mostly broken registry and any shortcut links will not work.

Most (>95%) of programs allow you to specify the default install location.

Any that don't you are pretty stuck. Though, you may be able to install them, getting the folder location then use symlinks to point to another drive. But this is of course, tedious.

Personally the easiest way of moving everything would be to just reinstall windows at the same time.

I have just installed a second SSD into my system. My C drive (SSD) is >75% full).  I want to take the program files from my C drive am put them on my D drive.  I am running Win 7.

Is there a way to have windows perform the installation on the D drive automatically, either transfering exeisting files or installing new program files?  I just uninstalled MS office 2010 and reinstalled hoping I could redirect the install to the D drive, but no dice.

Thanks

chad

Not every program enables you to install on a certain drive.
