Can I transfer my windows installation from a disc to a usb?

Thelillypad123

I don't want to have to purchase another copy of windows. I have it on a disc that I purchased from Microsoft, but I have no optical drive. Can I transfer the installation files to a usb so I can download?

You can download the ISO and then create the install media, so long as you have an active windows key.

Yeah what that post said. You can find the ISO file, run a program like USB installer or something (there are bunches of programs that can make bootable USB drives, just google it), and the plug it in and boot from it. Bam. It will start installing whatever OS you put on the

flash drive. I did that when I installed my copy of windows because I didn't have a CD drive either.

EDIT:

If you are trying to install Windows on two different systems at the same time, the key will not let you, so you know in advance. If you are moving installation to a different system after uninstalling the original, then it should work.

So like just download the ISO and installation media on a flash drive from Microsoft website and use the product key that's included on the box?

Yep, that's how I did mine when I created the USB installer.
