What the ....

So a 130 dollar mobo AND a 30 dollar cooler for a locked cpu.

Seems legit.

You realy should go for an Raid Card !!

If your are not going to virtualise Servers, your system is not a good choice because :

!. what you want to do can be easily done with a VIA oder ARM Board, which will consume about 10 W.

But more important is, that the Hardware you want to use will die very quickle when running 24/7 because its consumer hardware !

You need Server hardware !

If you can't afford server grade hardware go for used hardware on ebay. I've done this a lot an nerver had any issues, because this hardware was only 1-2 years in use.
I'm running such a server for about 5 years without any problems

Thanks for the advise! :D

I guess I should build a scrapyard server (execpt the HDD's)

Any recommendations on which used hardware should i have in my home server?

I don't have the necessary recommendations that will substantiate my reply, but $700 for basically backing up and storage purposes seems a bit much, not to mention not terribly efficient. I know NAS solutions are similar in price, but there is less hassle in setup and maintenance.

This sounds very good ! ( Check out Linus Tech Tips Video of this Board )

I think you can cover a lot with this configuartion.

Install a Linux like CentOS oder if you are not that much experianced a FreeNAS and there you go.

I would recomend to add another HDD and go for Raid 6 ! Because with Raid 6 two HDDs can fail before any Data is lost.

Make sure you got an good Raid Controller.c because if you use an cheep one or the intigrated Raid (which is called FakeRaid, because its software based an needs to be accelerated by the CPU) your drive performance may be very poor

If you are planing to do more advanced server stuff in the future like firewalling, webantivirus, global authentication, vpn access and  lots more cool stuff

You should think of other server hardware wich is capable to do virtualisation ( best way is to choose VMware ESXi compatible Hardware)

So you can host e.g. a BSD Firewall, a Linux Fileserver, a Sophos UTM Webantivirus (free home appliance) and so on

In this case (i have done this often)

I would recomend an Supermicro Serverboard with an AMD Opteron 4/6/ or 8-Core (less expensive an more powerfull than a Xeon, in this low price segment) and ecc RAM plus an LSI oder Adaptec Raid Card.

In my opinion if you are going to spend so much money on a new system it should be flexible fore future options and should last about 3.4 years.

So also think of what you might want to do with this server in the next few years
