Hey guys,

I am building a new computer for uni and i was looking at the more resent Mobos around and saw that most of them have a the new M.2 port in them for Faster Data Transfer ect, i was wondering if it would be worth it to get a M.2 to SATA card, will this speed up my computer or will it just stay the same due to SATA having a standard rate of data Transfer, just curious.

Thanks

Okay Thank you, i was just curious, now would any of you recommend a M.2 SSD for your OS?

If you have a motherboard that can run the M.2 at x4 speed then yes you could and should use it at a boot drive for your OS.

Many older boards with an M.2 will run the M.2 at either Sata speed using the same lanes as the Sata drives or will run it at x2 speed or even x4 but only at PCI-e 2.0 speed.

The newer ones like the Asus x99 Rampage has an M.2 that runs it at PCI-e 3.0 with x4.  Considering the speed of a normal SATA is 550 MB/s  .. The new M.2 from Samsung gets you this:
