Hello I'll be building my first pc in a about a weeks time and was woundring if I need an anti-static band and if so where do I attach it to so that it works.

I use them just for safety.. RMAs are a pain. But I attach to the fan grille of a plugged in PSU.

The projects never end in my line of work.

Strictly speaking it is not ABSOLUTELY necessary. However, it is not a bad idea. If you are not on carpet, running around in socks, and touch the turned off PSU at the begging of the build you will be OK

Never used one, never killed a component because of it.

I'd just take your power supply, don't hook it up to anything, just plug it in and touch a metal part of it every so often to ground yourself.

If you follow the book yes it will say you will need one.

If you can find one for cheap get one always better to have one.

You attach it to your wrist and attach the other side  to your case.

I've built over 200 computers without one and never damaged anything.

On my socks on a carpet floor in the winter with pets around :)

You need it for sure. And if you can also grab a ASD mat it's even better.

You can buy a earth-plug to connect it to the wall socket. But DONT try to make a plug by yourself.

An other option you be to connect it to the rediator of your room (they should be grounded whhen installed properly).

If all this options are not possible, connect the band to the (metal) case of your PC.

Thanks so if i just touch the metal of the case every 5 minutes, and stand on wooden floors ill be okay?

ESD is sneaky. You can damage a component without noticing and it will die two month later.

But the maximum voltage you can charge yourself is highly depending on the environment. In winter then the air is dry from the heating and you stand on isolating floor (like wood) cou can reach ~100 000 Volt (yes it's 100kV). In summer after raining and a lot of humidity ESD is not a big deal.

A lot of the components have build in ESD protection, because they know the consumers are not aware of the danger. But I personally don't feel good by relying on this.

At work we have to waer special conductive shoes and the chairs are also conductive as well as the floor. And every morning we have to test it.

The chance is high you won't damage something by touching the case, but the cost of a band compared to the PC is negligible.

You will be fine. Look at these people who have built hundreds of computers with ESD out the window. But if you have one or can get it cheap it is not a bad idea

Yeah, that would be OK
