Would having a small SSD for strictly the os be good? And having a larger SSD for programs accessed frequently? (games/programs) and then a hard drive on the side for the extra programs that aren't use as much.

Or how do you configure your storage set up? I have a 480gb ssd, and its filling up real quick.

I run a 120-240GB SSD as an OS/Main drive, with a 1TB or bigger regular hard drive for storage. Any games that like fast access speeds (like Battlefield) go on the smaller SSD, and everything else (Steam mostly) goes on the mechanical. Results in a very efficient system setup.

Plus in the case of an emergency when I have to nuke my OS I only lose a bit since the primary drive is so small.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

I basically have this set up, but my C drive keeps filing up from all the downloads im having. I was thinking about getting a smaller 120gb drive for OS only, and allow it to expand. Maybe even 240gb to put a game or two..

It would be better to have one SSD and one HDD if you plan it to be mainly gaming since SSD don't' really gain much extra performance only faster load times. It would be better to have one larger 250 or 500Gb SSD and a HDD for games and everything else. You can however maximized space on the SSD by remapping downloads folders and documents and such into a set of folders inside of the HDD instead of the SSD

Any guide for that stuff?

Not that I know of that's pinned on the forum since it can vary between each persons personal choice, but for the remapping it's fairly simple you want to go into the directory where you see all your folders such as my documents downloads, etc and right click properties of a specific folder and it will give you a locations tab. From there you can remap it to a dedicated folder you make somewhere inside of the HDD, being the new default location.

For troublesome download folders I have always found Link Junctions really handy. It's a little hidden feature in Windows, hard to get to but there is excellent little software pieces like this:
