7970 to 960?

Hi guys.

 

I was just wondering how these cards compare. I am thinking of getting a 960 card (not sure of which one yet) and am currently running a gigabyte 7970 3gb windforce but wanted to check too see if there is a performance difference. The benchmarks I have seen either don't compare the same games or if they do run at different settings totally and I am finding it hard to gauge which is better. Or more importantly if the 960 is faster by how much. I would be losing 1gb vram but don't see that as too big of a issue as I game at 1080 anyway but would consider a 4gb version if you guys think its a decent upgrade.

Why spend $200 to change to an arguably worse card?

The 960 isn't an upgrade but a downgrade.

The 7970 is the quicker card, You also get an extra gig of frame buffer which modern games seem to be using more of so that'll help out abit.

Yea I knew they were close to some degree and if the 960 was faster it would be maybe 15% at most but wanted to ask thanks for the quick reply guys!

If anyone does see this and can answer (trying to save posting agian) what would you suggest for someone in my position is it worth forking out the extra for a 970 or should I just wait for next generation and see what that offers?

your 7970 should be doing OK at 1080.

 

its not really worth upgrading unless you go to at least a 970 or 290, those cards are not massively faster than your 7970.

 

If you can hold out it would be better to just wait it out for the AMD 3xx series.
