I'm upgrading from a 2009 mini laptop. I need a laptop for coding websites and taking notes at uni. Which means that I won't really be using much else than the most common browsers with maybe a little over a dozen tabs and something like notepad++/sublime with winSCP. So it probably doesn't need to be a real powerhouse.

I want it to be extremely portable so I can take it with me everywhere. I'm hoping to have a screen resolution of at least 1080p so I can have a browser window and my code side-by-side.

I use mostly cloud and won't be installing much on it, so storage isn't much of a concern to me either. I'd say I'll be fine with 64GB (preferably SSD). I don't really use any peripherals either, so I don't really have a need for any ports or optical drives.

  • portability: preferably <1.3kg/2.8lb - the less, the better
  • input: either touch screen OR multi-touch trackpad (two-finger scrolling etc)
  • screen: >=1080p, size doesn't matter
  • price: the lower, the better. Preferably max €800/$860
  • connectivity: will probably be sharing my phone's wifi - no cellular needed
  • battery: >6h

I've been looking at Surface 3. It's extremely portable (622g), which is very important to me and the keyboard seemed nice enough. Its nice build is a plus also. Though I don't require much from it performance wise, I'm a little concerned that 2GB ram isn't going to cut it - any thoughts? Of course there's the 4GB model and the Pro version also, but I'd prefer paying as little as possible.

Any other options? MS products would be nice given that MS gives a 10% student discount. But then again, I don't really need a tablet and don't mind too much if it doesn't have a touch screen if the mouse pad is good.

Thanks:)

I'd suggest the UX305 since it's only $699 with 8/256GB.

Looks really nice, but it's a little expensive. For some reason the prices are very high (899€/859usd for 128GB) for that model in my country. I could of course order it from another country, but it would be a bit annoying to have wrong keyboard layout on it. But I guess that wouldn't be the end of the world. I'll have to consider getting that one if I can't find anything cheaper.

EDIT: NVM, it looks like one key is missing physically, so simply switching layout wouldn't work.

I would suggest this ;

Best one for web development ..

I need to be able to test my sites on Firefox and IE also, so that won't do. Are there any proper FTP/SSH-clients for it anyway? Or something similar to XAMPP?

I really doubt that would be a viable option. Thanks anyway.

snip

I would get the 4gb model of the Surface 3, Windows eats RAM

Take a look at the XPS 13, it's a very nice ultrabook

That's a very nice laptop, but it's double the price of the surface and I doubt I'd have use for that high specs...

That makes sense. I just suggested it to give you some options.
