Hello all,

Been a fan of Linustechtips for awhile, but first time posting on the forum was wondering what people thought of a new build I am planning in the future. Currently running an AMD FX 8350 4.00ghz, 1TB WD blue, Nvidia GTX560 with 16GB of G skil DDR3, THor V2 case. motherboard passes my mind at the moment. Looking to upgrade to this system:

MSIx99 Krait ed. 2011v3 motherboard - $259.99

EVGA GTX 970 4GB 256-DDR5 - $329.99

EVGA Supernova 850 80+ gold full mod. - $154.99

Intel i7- 5820K Haswell 6 core 3.3ghz - $389.99

SanDisk Ultra II 240G SSD - 91.99

G Skill Ripjaw DDR4 3000 16GB - $249.99

WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM, 64MB cache - $54.99

Corsair H105 240mm liquid cool - $109.99

2 noctua 120MM fan (replace the stock h105 fans) - $57.98

Noctua NF-A14 140mm fan - $29.99

Artic Silver 5 high density thermal compund - $8.99

Windows 8.1 64bit OEM - $99.99

total= $1.838.87

All going inside my Thor V2 white case.

All for gaming, mild video/photo editing and everyday processes.

What does everyone think? any changes comments?

honestly id change the psu to a corsair ax 760 or 860 just because for the price youd be spending on the evga psu the corsair would be a better buy.

I don't see a reason why an 1800 dollar build doesn't include a 980!  You can shave some money to fit it in right?!?  :)

Thank you for the suggestion. The corsair is the same cost but I do upgrade to platinum and the amount of watttage I'm using currently is a bit much for the build so going to the 760 does offer the benefit of not drawing too much power while gaining the platinum savings. I'll make note of it.

I did look at the 980 as an option, however, when comparing the two (even watching Linus' remarks on them) the 980 doesn't offer me much more in terms of GPU for the applications I would be using them for, plus the extra $200 cost kinda kills it for not much more bang for buck on this build. Thank you for the suggestion though. If I was not considering cost and getting most for system I would easily have done the 980 or even pushed to a Titan :-p.

Pretty solid build. You could go for a 4 core processor and then upgrade your GPU to GTX 980?

I thought about about dropping the cores, saves me about $100 (depending on model) and could pump up my gpu, but the extra cores will benefit the mild workstation processes I will be doing. Thank you for the input though :-)

I would keep your current system. Upgrade the gpu to a GTX 970 or R9 290X. Add a 240GB+ ssd. If you are not currently overclocking the cpu, do so. Add a good after market cooler if needed.

What psu does the current system have?

It is a good suggestion. I typically do not overclock as I worry about messing up on a simple error, even though there are hundreds of detail instructions on how to do it properly, it still worries me; but I might give it a shot with the new intel as it only turbo boosts to 3.6 standard.

The current system is running on a rosewill bronze 900w system.

As far as the keeping current system and upgrading I did think about it but I have another use inteded for that system, which would be building my fiance a computer with some upgrades on the selected parts you had mentioned and I will def. consider those suggestions for building her rig. Thank you for the response and suggestions, greatly appreciate it.

I would suggest some changes to the OP build. The Asus X99-A is a decent motherboard. (I prefer Asus motherboards.) EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply is more than sufficient power for the build. It is an excellent psu, arguably better than any Corsair offering, at a very good price point. The Corsair H100i GTX is thiner than the H105 which will make installation easier. It should also do a better job. I hope the memory kit is 4x4GB to take advantage of quad channel memory operation.

Did you consider a Z97 build? The Asus SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK S ATX LGA1150 Motherboard would look very good in the Thor V2-W case.

I hadn't considered the 750w EVGA, even though I did pick the 850, not sure how I overlooked that model as it is $30 cheaper and provides me with more than enough power as suggested. I know a previous comment suggested the corsair 760ax. Now I am torn. I am partial to corsair even though I am currently on a rosewill. I will have to give some serious thought to that recommendation between the two PSU's.

I am not a huge fan of ASUS boards and have typically stuck to MSI and have been very fond of what they offer but will look into the ASUS board and see what it has to offer.

The h100i GTX was never really an option for me, and what kinda stumped that out upon my research was the video Linus and the guys did comparing the three models. The h105 sits in the middle and for the price and the space I have for the rad, it is not too concerning.

I did look at the sabertooth boards but am wanting to jump into the x99 platform of boards to take advantage of the, sadly more expensive, DDR4 ram and 2011v3 CPU and see how that all plays out, and yes, it most certainly is a 4x4 kit to utilize that boards luxories. Sadly the nature of enjoying new technology and playing with it.

Thank you for the suggestions I will def. consider the PSU and ASUS board and see which one sticks out as meeting my needs for the price.

The Corsair AX760 is built by Seasonic. The AX760i by Superflower. Also the manufacturer of the EVGA G2 psu.

Correction: The AX760i is built by Flextronics, not Superflower. The EVGA G2 are built by Superflower.

good thinkin, just add another 970 when u can though, cause that would be significantly better than a 980

CPU-i5 4690k 4.4ghz @ 1.190V, MOBO-MSI z97 gaming 3, Cooler-hyper 212 evo, GPU- r9 290x asus directcuII (-37Mv), Storage-120gb v300(switching soon), 1tb caviar blue, CASE-Red/black h440, PSU-Antec TPC 650.

If I were to upgrade this to a full workstation PC that def. would be a route to go, especially for the cost, as I can't see myself ever spending 1k on a GPU let alone two, running the SLI on two 970's would really give the system a good push for those purposes while still avoiding the extra cost of the 980 and still gaining that performance. Thanks for the comment :-)

I want to thank those people who responded with comments and suggestions. As one post mentions, I was going to wait a bit longer before making this purchase but I caved and ordered the parts taking into account the suggestions given. So with that, this post is now over and I will post the completed specs and build once they arrive and I fire it up. Thank you all again.

Why would you change the EVGA psu ? It is one of the best psu's around for price/performance. The Corsair AX will almost certainly cost more. The 750W version of the EVGA would be my suggestion.

The EVGA G2 is not that great ? Seriously ?

I would say that the EVGA G2 is every bit as good and for less money.

If prices were similar, I would likely go with the AX 760. But only because it is more efficient. Quality wise the psu are identical. Given that current market pricing has the G2 substantially less expensive, it would be foolish to choose the AX 760.
