So I recently upgraded to two 290's. Before my cpu usage was very low while gaming and never, never reached 50c. Now it reaches 50c and is loud as hell. I use a 4690k and h100i. Is it normal for crossfire to rocket cpu usage to around 80-99%? And if so, can you give me advice on what two fans to buy to put on the radiator cause this is insane. Thanks!

Also if there is a bad ass air cooling fan available for around 100$ that blows the h100i out of the water, what would said fan be?

Seeing it jump this much is interesting. I don't think it should be like that, but then it might just be a bad CF profile.

What games are you seeing this on?

For the radiator, I'd suggest fitting Noctua NF-F12s.

Sig under construction.

Maybe because you are using 290 cf now and therefore the overall temp in the case is much MUCH higher than before that? I'm not sure thou just thinking if it might be the case. where is your h100i mounted and is it intake or exhaust?

Just random thinking. If you are mount on top of case as exhaust, the air you are drawing from is within the case which will have higher temps than before due to 2 x 290. So in theory, your cpu will no longer be as cool as last time (before you cf).

I use a Thor v2 case, the fans are under the radiator and blowing air onto the video cards. Should I swap the radiator and fans and set as exhaust? Or should I just leave the fans under the radiator and set as exhaust (would that make sense?) or leave as is. I figured the way I have it creates positive air pressure.

Understood what you meant. For me, I also try to maintain positive airflow and also I'm using the H440 (not great airflow) and also I'm living in Singapore which is summer 365 days a year ... Basically what I do is that when I'm gaming on it, I will just open the side panel and release the kraken~ I mean release the hot air in to room.

Anyway, back to you (side tracked too much), I think your temps should still be find as long as it below 60c. If it's too loud, maybe you could look into changing the fan for those "silent fan". I'm gaming on headset or earpiece most of the time so noise is not such a big issue to me.

Ya I was reading that a noctua dh14 is about as cool as a h100i but much quieter at 19db. Mine has to be well over 40db. Ya seriously. So what do you recommend for radiator fans. Something good, don't worry too much about price but of course be reasonable. Perhaps something even cooler than stock corsair fans and quieter to partner with the radiator? Or is there a badass fan cooler out there that is better than the h100i. Don't care if it's ugly I don't have a window on the side.

Btw I completely understand. I live in Arizona, where 75F is nice and chilly. Common to see triple digits for months straight.

Well, I was looking at Noctua fan before. Always heard they are good and quiet. be silent is also another brand which is good. I'm still kind of noob to all this as well, so maybe we have to wait for the other to comment on it. :(

But all I do know is that you have to get good static pressure fan for radiator. That is all I learn and know. :( I'm ashamed.

Well I have a 230mm spare fan, so if I buy a dh14 and put that 230mm fan back on top where the h100i is, wouldn't that be an overall gain in cooling? Cause now I have a quiet heat sink and another fan to bring in cool air. That has to be better right?

I wouldn't swap out the water cooling for NH-D14 (if that's the one you're thinking of). I'd rather get some better fans for the water cooling. Perhaps move the fans on the radiator to the top, blowing out of the case, and set all other fans to suck into the case. This would allow cool air to come in from below and hot air to be expelled at the top, which is the natural flow direction for hot air. Dual R9 290's will produce a lot of heat, so having case temps rise compared to a single card is only to be expected.

50°C is not hot for a CPU under full, or nearly full load though, so you shouldn't need to worry about that.

I'm not convinced that Noctua fans are still quite as much better than the competition as they used to be, from the tests I've seen on youtube, there are plenty of others that are just as good. EKWB Vardar seems to be a good option for radiator fans, and getting two of those for your H100i might improve both cooling and sound a bit.

Ok I'll do as you advised. And sure, I'll do some digging around and see how Vaders and other perform. Thanks!
