Graphics card question on Hackintoch

I just watched Ultimate Overclocked Hackintoch Workstation Build Guide on you guessed it LinusTechTips and there Linus said that "you want to avoid non reference cards" which made me wonder. Could non reference card that has reference PCB design work?

They'd need to have the referance bios pretty sure. 

 

It *can* work, but don't always expect it to. You can look for a list of gpus that work fully with osx online.

I had no plans on making an hackintoch unless i could find mac somewhere cheap or borrow one but so far i was just wondering if it would work because i have EVGA GTX 480 which by my knowledge looked like reference design. I scrolled through that list and my GPU was not supported, not my motherboard or anything else as far as i looked so i think i stop looking for mac. But yeah thanks anyway :)
