Hi there,

I'm a long time viewer on YouTube, first time poster, currently in the process of saving for a new laptop.

I do some music production and am looking for a laptop that will serve well as a live performance fx rack through ableton live 9 (x64). I've been dazzled by the Lenovo y50 due to it's spec to buck ratio and have heard that it serves well as a multimedia workstation in addition to being a good gaming laptop.

My main concern is that in order to process effects live, i need zero latency in the conversion and manipulation process. I know the audio card is important here (i currently use a focusrite scarlette 2i4 and i fujitsu lifebook expanded to 8gb ram; a terrible laptop indeed) however when i went shopping for a better audio card, i was told that the cpu is more important when eliminating latency in recording, i thought this contradicted the idea of better converters = less latency so i'm confused.

Will a Lenovo y50 improve this latency? or is it overkill for my needs and the problem lies with my audio card?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

(also should mention that I'm looking at the uhd version with 256gb ssd (overestimating my ability to save))

Should not be over kill at all, all ways better to go overkill as it will last longer over time! I would say go for it because you can never be to slow!
