RAM Upgrade Question (Will it work)

Go to solution Solved by slightlyjaded,

Buying a second set of 2x4s will work. it's how most people upgrade their dual channel configurations.

There are some caveats:

Make sure the CAS timings are the same. If you're buying the same set as you brought the first time this won't be an issue.

If you're overclocking your RAM then a matched set is always a better idea, as they have be binned to work together, and the minimal variations between ram dimms won't lead to as much instability at higher speeds. (I'm not saying a mismatched set won't work, just that the higher you go, the more voltage you'll have to put through them)

I have purchased one set of [this RAM] in the past (F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL).

I was looking into upgrading it to 16GB (4x4GB) by buying the exact same set again from Newegg (same vendor). My question is would this work, or do I have to blow 100$ on a ‘verified’ 16GB set of 2x8GB/4x4GB and use my current RAM as decoration?

Also, is there anything special to do in the BIOS before upgrading? I'll be adding a HDD (just more storage), and (possibly) the RAM. (Is there anything I have to do to ensure that the computer doesn't flip and fail to load windows with all my files?)
