If private server then your PC is enough, just make sure its RAM is enough.... It eats your RAM.

I want to be able to run a Minecraft server for me and my friends. My question is should I buy a separate PC to run the server on or is running the server on my personal PC enough? Any help is appreciated.

I personally run a private server for me and my friends and it is very easy. You will just have to get DMZ set up on ur router to allow friends to connect (in most cases) and give ur friends ur IP. I would recommend at minimum 8gb of total computer ram to run a vanilla Minecraft server or even a nodded server and a client on the same PC. I have a 16gb ram desktop and it handles some of the largest modpacks with a server just fine. I normally dedicate 4gb of ram to the server in this case and 2gb of ram to the server on my 8gb ram laptop. To allocate more ram you will have to create a batch file to launch the server with the argument of ram dedication. If u need this bit of code I can post it, but I am on mobile right now. Hope this helps!
