I usually recommend the R9-285, but in this case... now that I'm actually faced with making a purchase, I can not decide between a R9-280, R9-285, or GTX-960. I'd go with the 280x, but prices have shot up over the past week.

Just about to pull the trigger on the rest of the parts. This is around the upper side of my GF's budget, so going much farther is unlikely.
 
She'll also never use any more storage than the >240gb that will be available from the SSD.
