So I was browsing through Newegg looking at 7770's when Newegg suggested this to me     http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231687

Can someone please explain to me why this memory is $800. Am I missing something because to me it looks like 8 GB or ram with some fans to go over top of it.

The reason it's so expensive is because of binning. Very, very few ram modules will run at that speed, so they have to cherry pick them for these high frequency kits (aka the binning process). So it's a supply and demand thing. They get very few that are able to run that fast, so they have to sell them as such, otherwise they'd never be in stock.

What a joke. Wonder what the performance increase is actually like looking at onboard gpu then with a discrete gpu then looking at server and professional applications. Maybe it'd be better to just add another 780 to your rig for more compute power? Also why 4 gig dimms ?

Interesting

Dude, if you add flames it will be 2000 dollars because flames make it faster bruh.

It's because of the memory speed.

At that frequency it's really just for overclockers and the e-penis factor. And only 4GB dimms because the denser the modules, the harder it is to get them to run at that frequency

As far as I'm concerned, having faster RAM is pretty much useless so there's no need for it to be that expensive. I mean seriously, how often is it your RAM's fault that your computer is being slow?

It would make one heck of APU visual's

Basically, very few chips come out of the manufacturing process good enough to achieve those speeds.  It is one in a million.  As with anything rare, the usefulness may go up linearly, but the price goes up exponentially...
