Hi. I have a customer that uses very old (win 95) custom software and they have replaced the laptop it runs on with a new one. We have got the software running using 8.1 Pro compatibility mode. the software communicates with some hardware over RS232. the issue we are having is we believe that the processor is to fast for the software causing it to time out before its received a response. Is there a setting/software (I'm thinking like the old turbo buttons that old PC's had) that can let us slow the processor to see if it is the issue.

Thanks Alex

1. I doubt that is the issue

2. go into the bios and lower the clock multiplier

Yea its a long shot but we have tried everything else.

Its just a celeron hp laptop i doubt the multiplier is unlocked. but TBH i haven't looked

Get some new software, please

Not an option at this point.

Is there a reason that hes using windows 95? The sercurity is terrible. Does he know that he can move all his files to win7 or 8.1?

It is using 8.1 pro but it is also not online. Its in a truck

Ummm.... Even if you do underclock, the processor would still likely be running faster than anything before 2000. Edit: unless you mean that the software is linked to the frequency of the CPU, and not just the CPUs power. It was a thing back then, but seems unlikely since this isn't the first upgrade while still using this software.

Have you tried a VM running windows 95 to see if it's not the compability mode? This wouldn't need to be done on the clients computer even for testing purposes.
