I have a Samsung 850pro 128GB, 500GB and 1TB. Will be using 128 for OS plus some programs and 500 or 1TB for programs, games and as temporary storage. I got no experience with these things and  I was wondering If any of you guys have seen them in action and how they would work, any ideas?

I know the top choice is expensive but it already has slots for two. Saves space and the hassle. Any other recommendations aside from these three?

The things I need to know are:

  • Are these plug and play?

  • Can you do raid with two of these? What kind?

  • Slower or faster boot up times compared to sata instead of PCIE?

  • Recommendations?

Might be using these on a x79 or x99 board hope this helps.

Ideas and helpful feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm really interested if someone has actual experience in one of these or similar products. From what I see the drive is still limited with SATA speeds since its just SATA card with place for drive. How good option would this be for example smaller case like ITX?

So am I, this is actually research for current and future projects! As for me it doesn't really matter if its the same speed as long as its not slower. I mean its less wires and more options win-win.

Did a little digging, they look like they are just fancy connectors for your 2.5" drives.

They do look plug and play, might need drivers for fancy features or to fully utilize them.

They do not look to natively support RAID, but any drives can be combined into a software RAID within windows.

PCIe is currently slower to boot than SATA, since SATA is loaded first.

Honestly, these will not make anything faster or better, and will just create a new potential point of failure.  They are just a different way to connect the same drives to your system, likely for if you ran out of SATA ports.

Thanks for the info mate. I kinda had a feeling that it would be a bit slower but didn't want to believe just yet. I do like the idea of having the option of doing things differently but I also agreed that it may cause new problems. With that said still doing some research.....

Oh yeah some of them do come with driver disks but still the point remains not enough info on the performance.

Also to add in on the performance, they will not be faster or better.  They can't be.  They can only go as fast the drives you connect to them, and those drives are going to be sata3, which most newer mobos have.  So you would actually be making your drive slower, because you are adding an extra layer of complexity.  This would only be worth it if you had a SATA3 SSD, but only had SATA2 ports on your mobo.  And even then, it would likely be better and cheaper to just get a PCIe SATA3 port expander card for less than $50.

But even then, it will still boot slower than the SATA2 ports.
