what  is the difference between motherboards when is comes to Z97, H97, Z87 and etc. What does this say about the motherboard? And when a motherboard says that it has 2xPCIe-x16 does it mean that it supports both SLI and Cross Fire or can it just support one of those?

Z97/Z87 usually supports SLi

in order for SLi to work

you need at least x8/x8 for dual GPU configs

what you see is the slot is x16 electrically but can be reduced to x8 speeds when 2 GPUs are used

H97 will only have X16 and the X4 is not suited for SLi but for Crossfire, it fine

So the 97, 87 and etc tells if the MOBO supports SLI/cross fire or not?

the mobo website will tell if the board is SLi ready or not

cheaper mobos may only have CF support but not SLi

like the MSI Z97 PCMate, Asus Z97-K/C

other like the MSI Z97 SLi Krait are SLi and CF ready
