Hello~

So i had a small question about my work computer that is starting to show signs of hating me every time i throw it a work load at it. I recently was able to buy myself a i5 4690k with a Asus z97-A to replace the FX 6300 paired with a MSI 970A that i have had for about a year and a half now.

My question was mainly, because im switching out AMD for Intel Would I need to format my boot drive to get everything working correctly? or would i just need to delete the drivers with the Control Panel for the MSI motherboard?

it always good practice to perform a reformat of the HDD

but yes can just remove all the mobo drivers of the old mobo

You'll need to reinstall windows. This is even the case when switching from one intel platform to another. This is because your windows license is tied to your motherboard, even if you can get it to run properly in the end you'll most likely will run into trouble with windows is not legitimate errors.

I'm surprised you decided to make this change. I actually haven't read up at on cpu's so I have no idea what are the differences. However, since you said "workload" and not specifically "gaming", I would have assumed the six cores would give the four core non HT i5  a run for its money. Let us know how it works out.

I have been told by others who do the same work as i do that the i5s and i7s are the best choice xD

Unfortunately i have windows 8.1, unless that works for it?

i5s will handle a lot of workloads better than a 6300

I just went from an FX-8320 & GA-970A-UD3P and put an ASRock Extreme6 & 4790K in my build, I didn't have to reinstall windows for everything to work properly, had no issues.

I reinstalled it anyway just to start anew, and I'd suggest doing the same.

CPU swap typically doesn't merit a reinstall, a Motherboard swap usually does though.

When people say to reinstall windows you can use the same windows disk/usb, but just a different license key to save a bit of money :)

Ive been able to just replace the mobo and cpu (even from AMD <-> intel) most of the time with no problems.

I would recommend u take a backup of all your data before u try anything.

Sometimes i have to run the windows repair tool (usually on the windows cd) to get it to work.

how can you get a different key

you can buy them of ebay or amazon there much cheaper than another disk or G2a even sell's them I think but when your buying any key from any website make sure its ''NEW'' and not coming from any seller. :)
