Surge Protector Suggestions?

Go to solution Solved by d3sl91,

Yeah, that's fine.

You can find out the maximum amperage of each item and see if that is more than 15A, but I can almost guarantee it's not.

Amps = Wattage Divided by Voltage

So, that 850W PSU will max use around 7 Amps. In reality, you will probably only use 2A. (Edit: I think i am wrong, since that is what the unit provides to the system, not draws from the wall, hence the different efficiencies, but still, its pretty close).

All of those smaller items will use less than your PC.

And then your HDTV potentially could be the most power hungry, depending on the type, but all in all, i'd be suprised if you had more than 10A listed there.

My current surge protector is like 15+ years old, so while I'm adding more expensive parts to my PC and about to buy a 32" HDTV, I want to get a new one that is going to suit my needs.

I estimate the following things to be plugged into it:

32" HDTV

Kindle Fire HDX Charger (relevant when not in use?)

Xfinity Gateway Modem/Router

Netgear Router (bought this a month before we got comcast and kept it out of pure principal)

DirecTV DVR/Receiver

EVGA Supernova G2 850W PSU

Most of the surge protectors I've seen talk about a max of 500V and something like 15 Amps. My understanding of voltages and amps is like a child's understanding of taxes, but am I wrong in thinking this is too little for what I'll be using? The PSU alone surely uses up a ton, right?

Also, for nightmare mode, I could also plug in 3 22" ASUS 1080p LCD monitors. However, to be safe I'd likely be plugging these into their own outlet. I just want to get a feel for what I'd need to be absolutely safe. This is the surge protector I was originally looking at. I'm looking for affordable options here.
