HDD image recovery

Hey guys, my first post here on the forums. Feels kinda bad to come here, asking for help right in the beginning. Hopefully I'll be able to help someone else out some other day. 

I had some issues with my moms computer lately. The computer is nothing fancy, just a computer for browsing the web and playing solitude. It died on here yesterday (overheating) and now when I start it, it will only post but I can't get into Windows. 

I'm going to do a re-install of Windows but I need some help on how to recover the images she has on her drive. They were placed in folders on her desktop and I really need to get them. I've tried connecting her drive to my computer but I can't locate the files. I can't really reach the desktop area of her drive. 

 

Specs of her computer:

OS: Windows 7 32-bit

AMD FX 4100 @ 3,93GHz
A-Data 4GB DDR3 @ 1333Mhz
Mobo: MSI 760gm-e51 fx
Grphics: MSI R5450

HDD: Seagate barracuda 7200. 500GB.

PSU: 500W random swedish brand.

So, I'm looking for some help on how to recover the images.

It died of overheating due to containing more dust than actual hardware inside the case. 
Oh, it's just a selfie I took after losing a game of trivial pursuit
