So I have been looking into building a new pc recently and I have read countless forums and watched every Linus video. I was wondering which motherboard manufacturer makes the best boards and also if it is worth the extra cost to get a "high end" motherboard. I plan to get an Intel core i7 4790k processor and a geforce gtx 980 and do some mild overclocking on the processor. I want to make sure that I don't get these high end components and then lose massive performance because I cheaped out on the motherboard. So if anyone has any suggestions/advice I would really appriciate it.

You can't lose performance from choosing a motherboard that isn't "Super High-End",  just go with a good quality one from a trusted brand like Asus, MSI or gigabyte. (To name a few)

Also high-end motherboards don't mean anything unless you are going to use their extra features, some are gimmicks some are not.

I ended up going with the Asus Z97 Pro Gamer. I started off with the Gigabyte z97 Gaming 5 but couldn't stand the fan control software. The Asus Uefi(Bios) really is that good. Good luck in your search. Also awesome chip.

UNG is right, just stick with good brands and make a decision for a motherboard that meets your needs and/or desires (color scheme, accessories, etc.). I wouldn't expect a motherboard to bottle neck any system so long as it is running properly. Also, if you are looking to milk a bit more performance out of any rig, you can always mildly overclock from the northbridge chipset, which will be easier on newer boards and UEFI/BIOS's.

From my experience all motherboards pretty much perform the same and have the same features. One might have more USB3, the other might have more maximum RAM. I usually just look for a cheap board that has 8+2 power phase. That's just me though.
